Experience the excitement as Rand relives his 271-day solo journey around the globe on his Westsail 32 Mighty Sparrow
Sponsored by Bitter End Yacht Club
The physical hazards of circumnavigation alone in a 32 ft. sailboat is daunting and extraordinary. Jerome Rand, Michigan native and Bitter End Yacht Club’s beloved watersports director, set sail on October 3, 2017 out of Gloucester, MA on a 29,800 mile single-handed voyage that ended on June 29, 2018. Rand endured all that nature could throw at him; high winds, rough seas, harrowing nights – alone with his thoughts and only his own hands to survive.
Saturday, September 15th, 2:00 - 3:00pm in The Bohlin Tent on the show site (free to show attendees)
Daily meet & greet and rum tasting at the Bitter End Rambler, 5:00-6:00 pm daily - located on The Bohlin Patio.

North Central Michigan College will present a special lecture featuring Jerome Rand on Thursday, August 16, 2018 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the Library Conference Center. Cost is $12 and includes lunch. Mr. Rand will be talking about his 271-day non-stop sail around the world aboard the Westsail 32, “Mighty Sparrow.”
On October 3, 2017, Jerome Rand set sail aboard the Mighty Sparrow for what would be a 271-day sail and the adventure of a lifetime. On June 30, 2018, the Mighty Sparrow sailed into Gloucester, Mass after nine months and 29,805 miles sailed. The journey tested every limit both mental and physical, from fierce winds to demoralizing calms, and everything in between. In the end it was perseverance and a bit of luck that would see this small boat through some of the world’s most dangerous seas.
